Heavy
bleeding may be due to different reasons. Besides surgery
for removal of the uterus – alternatives to the
same should be considered. Recently two methods of controlling
heavy periods without surgery have been introduced,
which may be useful in selected patients. Thermal balloon
ablation therapy means destroying the inner layer of
the womb by heat. It does not involve any anesthesia
and the woman is home the same day evening. It is applicable
to women who have completed their family. Mirena is
a hormonal coil, which can also be used even when the
family is not complete. It can reduce blood loss up
to 97% in a period of six months with practically no
side effects. We have performed over 80 Thermal balloon
ablations and inserted over 40 Mirena coils with satisfactory
results. |
